What causes radon gas in houses?

Radon is a radioactive gas that has been found in homes all over the United States. It comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water and gets into the air you breathe. Radon typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation.

What is the EPA acceptable level for radon?

The US EPA was tasked with setting practical guidelines and recommendations for the nation. To this end, the US EPA has set an action level of 4 pCi/L. At or above this level of radon, the EPA recommends you take corrective measures to reduce your exposure to radon gas.

Is radon only in basements?

Most commonly homes with basements are suspect for having higher radon levels. The fact that porous foundation walls allow radon gas to enter a home is no secret and with most basements containing a sump well, there are many access points from which radon can enter a home.

Should I test for radon when buying a house?

EPA RECOMMENDS: If you are buying or selling a home, have it tested for radon. For a new home, ask if radon-resistant construction features were used and if the home has been tested. Fix the home if the radon level is 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) or higher.

How does radon affect your health?

When you breathe in radon, it gets into the lining of your lungs and gives off radiation. Over a long time, that can damage the cells there and lead to lung cancer. Radon is the second biggest cause of lung cancer after cigarette smoking.

How much does it cost to get rid of radon?

Radon reduction systems work. Some radon reduction systems can reduce radon levels in your home by up to 99%. The cost of fixing a home generally ranges from $800 to $2500 (with an average cost of $1200). Your costs may vary depending on the size and design of your home and which radon reduction methods are needed.

How to read a manometer on your Radon system

This is an easy way to tell if your radon system is pulling the right amount of air for the type of system you have, also it will help you know if your system is in need of service by one of our technicians. The readout on the manometer should be between 0.5in – 1.75in. In most cases these are acceptable levels indicating, your system is operating correct. When your Radon system is shut off the fluid should rest at zero if it does not then your manometer is low on fluid. It is important to understand that these readouts will indicate if your system is in need of any maintenance and should be serviced.

 

Does the U-tube on the system indicate the radon levels? 
No, the U-tube on the radon system does not indicate radon levels. Only a radon test can indicate the levels of radon. The U-tube is only designed to indicate that the system is actually on and at what pressure. The house should be tested at least every two years.
